An excellent, concise, well illustrate book. A good prelude to seeing the actual mosaics.
The Italian guides published (in English) by Edizioni Salbaroli of Milan are the best around. This one contains a brief potted history (no mean feat as it was a very important place at one time), a simple map of the city centre and features on 16 places of interest. The illustrations are fantastic, both of breath-taking religious art and of buildings dating back to the 6th century. This is not a conventional tourist visitor guide. It does not recommend hotels, nightlife or restaurants (hey, it’s Italy – you’ll find food!).
It is a concentrated guide to what to SEE in Ravenna!
