Underlining in both volumes, much more in the 1st volume, because this is set up in chronological order, and everyone wants what the earliest of the earliest of the Church Fathers had to say about the Holy Eucharist and papal authority. Some people like this edition better than Quasten, who some view as having a few liberal issues.

In order that profit may be derived from reading the Fathers it is not enough to have studied their works from a literary and critical point of view – the student must also have the historical background and determine the doctrinal environment and observe the place occupied by each Father and the part he plays.
The significance of the texts cited in support of various dogmas can only be determined after having located them in their general historical background.
Learn to appreciate their doctrinal value as well as the spiritual profit to be gained by reading the Church Fathers.
