Steinmueller was at one point President of the Pontifical Commission on Scripture, from whence  came all the official directives on what could and could not be stated about the individual books of the bible.

In these 3 volumes, he exhibits clear insight into the nature of the issue between Catholics and “rationalists” in Biblical study. At  the same time, the author readily recognizes that; the author of Job is unknown;  not all the Psalms  were written by David; Solomon may not have written Qoheleth or Wisdom, and that the Johannine “comma” does  not seem to be  genuine.

Steinmueller2Vol. 1 discusses Inspiration, Canon, texts and Versions, Interpretation, History of  Interpretation, Biblical Antiquities, Palestinian Geography and linguistic matters. Vols. 2 and 3 are “introductions” of 347 and 409 pages, respectively.

No one should hold back from these books simply  because they are “Pre-Vatican II”: These are careful and penetrating volumes that are as important today as they were only 70 years ago.
