A New Introduction to Islam, Brown

Islam1Daniel Brown. 2004. Softcover. Underlining throughout, brief side notes.

€5.

The author is the Director of the Institute for the Study of Religion in the Middle East (ISRME). He is the editor of the forthcoming Wiley Blackwell Companion to the Hadith.

Easy to read, elegantly written, and at times humorous, this book bases itself solidly on the principle of critical thought. He consistently presents both traditional Muslim claims and the academic scholarly viewpoint. Neither perspective escapes scrutiny as he subjects each to the microscope of critical analysis, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of both arguments.

In addition to references to the major scholarly works with which one studying Islam is probably familiar, the author also includes a selection of resources for further study at the end of every chapter.

Index and Glossary included.

Underlining in blue pen throughout, with occasional summary notes on the side –this book was study material for a pontifical university in Rome.
